The Ringing of Solidifying Light — Listening to Kang Haitao’s Works

The details of sound may be fuzzy to you, but you will hear the breathy voice of night.

All we can hear in Kang Haitao’s works is a peaceful purity, a symphony of splender without any one discordant note. Levels of darkness penetrate the viewer’s heart, like the intoxicating melody of a flute coming from the deepest of forests.

A night hunter, he wanders alone in the silence and revels in the narration of a tiny world. He is patient, absorbed, understands how to move at time’s pace, and shows us the warmth of light.

Among the young generation of artists in China. Kang Haitao stands out as unaffected and calm as the night: through this may be incompatible with the pace of modern life, it puts him closer to what is natural and true. In his works one feels a strong sense of solidification: the space, light and breath freeze in midair, and from far away we can hear a single beautiful note slipping by. The transformation from a single plane to a fullness of sensation seems like a contradiction, but it creates a vivid experience of dissociation from and returning to reality.

Kang Haitao graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, where he learned to be closed himself off from the outside world to focus on his painting, giving a unity to his life and work. His unadorned and tranquil integration with and dedicated to his work brings continuous inspiration and a profound range.

In the vague world full of flattery that is contemporary art in China, a shaking is emerging from the silence. Both a hopeful return to humanity and a billowing of an inner world, Kang Haitao’s works conquer viewers with their distant and calm warmth.

People who understand Kang Haitao’s paintings will never have lonely nights. That ringing note is not a confession, but a proclamation.
